Myrl Elliott Brockway, age 92 of Fort Covington, NY., passed away Saturday afternoon, April 15, 2017 at her home while under the loving care of Hospice of the North Country and her close friends and neighbors, Wayne and Judy Jock. Born in Westville, NY on Briggs Street, on June 22, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Clarence J. and Maude LePage Elliott. Myrl played the clarinet in the first marching band formed at Fort Covington High School from 1937 until she graduated in 1942 with a Regents Diploma. On June 15, 1946, she was united in marriage to Floyd J. Brockway at St. Mary’s Church in Fort Covington, NY by the Reverend Robert O. Duford. He predeceased her on November 13, 1992. From 1943-1946, Myrl was employed as the bookkeeper and treasurer for the Shield’s Slipper Factory in Bombay, NY. In 1946, after her marriage to Floyd, they owned and operated Fort-Way Holstein Farm in Fort Covington, NY, where their registered Holstein cattle were sold to farmers in Canada, Europe, and throughout the United States. Myrl was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Fort Covington, NY where she was also a member of the Altar & Rosary Society. She was a member of the Association of Senior Citizen’s in Franklin County, the Cornell Extension Farm Service Agency, and the Franklin County Farm Bureau. She was also a past member of the Holstein Friesian Association of America, the Franklin County Holstein Club, the New York Holstein Association, the Franklin-St. Lawrence County Milk Cooperative, and the National Home Gardening Club. Myrl enjoyed landscaping and working in her flower and vegetable gardens, reading books and magazines on animals, birds, and blooms, and watching Antique Road Show and Animal Planet. She also enjoyed watching her game shows, political debates, and world news on TV. Some of Myrl’s pastimes included taking care of her cats and dogs, and feeding the wild birds around the house and farm. She is survived by a son, Elliott J. Brockway of Ogdensburg, NY and by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Myrl was predeceased by two brothers, Donald J. Elliott on December 18, 1980 and Leroy J. Elliott on September 25, 1999, and by one sister, Bernice C. Milljour on December 4, 2008. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 11am to 12pm at St. Mary’s Church in Fort Covington, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12pm at St. Mary’s Church with the Reverend Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will follow in the old St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fort Covington, NY. Donations may be made in her memory to The Alice Ballard Fund of Hospice of the North Country. Arrangements are through the Cappiello-McKenzie & Cosgrove Funeral Home of Fort Covington, NY.
