John M. Cantwell III, 92, passed away Friday, February 7, 2025, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone.
John was born November 8, 1932, to John Jr. and Margaret (Mallon) Cantwell in Malone.
John completed his education at Franklin Academy in 1952 before embarking on a four-year service in the Navy from 1952 to 1956. During his time in the Navy, he married Marion (Dora) Cantwell on May 11, 1953, at the Methodist Church in Burke. Their marriage spanned an incredible 72 years. After his Navy service, John pursued higher education at Paul Smiths, earning his Associates Degree in Forestry in 1958. He then dedicated 32 years of his career to working as a millwright at Alcoa. John's dedication to skate sharpening earned him the prestigious Wayne Castor Memorial - Fan Appreciation Award. His exceptional woodworking skills allowed him to craft furniture, cabinets, and even snowmen, and he was known for his ability to fix anything. John's passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of those who knew him, as his kindness, generosity, and sense of humor made a lasting impact on everyone he encountered, ensuring he will be cherished and remembered forever.
John is predeceased by his parents, John Jr. and Margaret Cantwell; and a sister, Grace Lord.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marion; sons, John Cantwell IV of Brushton and Michael Cantwell and Jennifer of Wilmington; daughter, Cynthia Cantwell of Freeport, FL; brother, George Cantwell of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Margaret Parrish of Oahu, HI; grandchildren, Gemma, Alyssa and Alyvia; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will take place Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Service in Malone. Burial to follow at the Morningside Cemetery.
