Obituary of Marion Miller Chatland

Marion Miller Chatland of 1000 Drum St., Fort Covington NY, age 94, passed away March 21, 2025 at home with her family by her side. She married John Franklin Chatland on September 1, 1950. Marion was known for her kindness and loving ways by all who knew her.  She was also known as the “walking encyclopedia.” Marion, daughter of Samuel Clifford Miller and Elizabeth Smiddy Miller, was born March 9, 1931 in Fort Covington. Marion graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1948. She worked at Salmon River Central School as District Treasurer for 15 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Chatland, on July 12th of 2019; a daughter, Jane Alison in 1955; siblings, John Miller, Harold Miller, Samuel Miller & his wife, Joyce Dumas Miller; and two grandchildren, Israel Jon Phillips and Erynn Alexandra Chatland Vondel. Marion predeceased her brother John’s wife Cecile Latulipe Miller by 9 hours, Cecile passed on 3/22 at 1:00 a.m. She leaves behind one brother, Clifford (Babe) Miller, his wife, Mary Green Miller, sister-in-law of Fort Covington, and sister-in-law, June Sprague Miller, of Bradenton, FL.  She also leaves behind son, Bradley Chatland and his wife, Tammi Smallman Chatland; daughter, Elizabeth (Beth) Chatland; sons, Eric (Rick) Chatland and his wife, Clarissa Terrance Chatland, Alan Chatland and his wife, Eve Gorrow Chatland; and daughter Doris (Dorie) Trinque and her husband, Charles Trinque, all of Fort Covington; as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Marion was a sports fanatic, she was her husband’s number one fan at his Sunday baseball games while he played for various teams in the North Country over decades, the last being the Fort Covington Travelers. She enjoyed golf until the age of 88, then continued her love of the sport watching all of the professional tournaments through the years.  Marion never missed a NY Yankees game, was a loyal fan of SRCS hockey and baseball, cheering on her grandsons and granddaughters alike. Her grandchildren supplied her numerous opportunities to enjoy a plethora of sports venues including horseback competitions, figure skating shows, school plays and concerts.    A lifetime devotee of crossword puzzles, her favorite challenge was the NYT Sunday puzzle.  She was an avid reader and was never without a book.   There will be no calling hours.  Following a Graveside Service on April 8th, a Celebration of Life will be held at 12:30 at the American Legion in Fort Covington.  Friends and relatives are invited.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or Hospice of the North Country.
