Ian R. Mitchell, 83, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Ian’s greatest pride in life was the family he built and cherished.
Born to Frederick Mitchell and Ida Evans Mitchell, Ian was raised with strong values of faith, hard work, and service to others. Those values carried him through every chapter of his life and were evident to all who knew him.
Ian was a man deeply committed to his community and his faith. He was a dedicated communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Fort Covington, an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and for many years, volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels to neighbors in need. He served his community as a former member of the Salmon River Central School Board and as a board member of the Elmwood Cemetery Association, helping to preserve and honor the memory of others. A proud member of the United Steelworkers (USW) Local 420-A Union, Ian believed strongly in solidarity and hard work.
Beyond his service, Ian found great joy in the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, and spending time in nature, always grateful for the peace it brought him. Known for his meticulous nature, Ian especially enjoyed preparing food for his family — his careful, precise way of cutting vegetables and melon became a lighthearted family hallmark. He was also a race competitor of One Lap of America 2004.
Ian was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Donal; his son-in-law, Jim Lindley; his brother-in-law, Paul Polansky; and his beloved in-laws, Leo and Madeline Leroux.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Sonja, of Fort Covington; his sons, Aaron Mitchell and wife Julie of Fort Covington, and Brock Mitchell and wife Sarah of Bombay; and his daughters, Ellen Mainville and husband Matthew of Fort Covington, Geri Mitchell of Fort Covington, Shauna Lindley of Fort Covington, Joni Oliver and husband John of Fort Covington, and Danielle French and husband Jeff of Fort Covington. He is also survived by two sisters, Patricia Walker and husband Grady of Sun City, Arizona, and Nelda Polansky of Guilderland, as well as many loving in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
Ian’s legacy lives on in his 24 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, each of whom was a source of immense pride and joy to him. He was proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s academic accomplishments and loved watching them play sports. His love, guidance, and devotion to his family will forever be remembered.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Fort Covington. Family and friends may gather at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. to honor Ian’s life and memory.
Ian will be remembered as a man of faith, service, and love — a steady presence whose life was marked by devotion to family, community, and the outdoors he so cherished. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Memorial Donations may be made in Ian’s name to Hospice of the North Country or Fort Covington Fire and Rescue.
