John M. Cushman, beloved father, grandfather, community leader, and veteran, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on September 30, 1946, in Nyack, NY, John spent his later years in Fort Covington, NY, where he left an indelible mark on his family and community.

A proud United States Marine, John exemplified dedication through his service and his unwavering commitment to his local American Legion, where he was a cherished member for over 50 years, serving as both commander and finance officer. His leadership and passion for community service extended beyond the military; he served on the Fort Covington Town Board for an impressive 46 years, where his vision and dedication shaped the town he loved.

John's career in the grocery industry was marked by his role as a partner at Fish's IGA, where he built lasting relationships with customers and colleagues alike. He was known for his integrity and kindness, epitomizing the spirit of community connection.

An avid lover of nature, John found joy in the beauty of the Salmon and St. Lawrence Rivers. Many will remember him paddling through the serene waters in his kayak, embracing the tranquility that the rivers provided. He cherished these moments deeply, and they will remain a part of his legacy.

John is survived by his two sons, John and Joseph Cushman, his beloved granddaughter, Chloe Cushman, and his companion, Louella Forkey, who will carry forward the values and love he instilled in them.

Interment to celebrate John's remarkable life will be held at a future date, where family, friends, and community members will gather to honor his memory, share stories, and express their gratitude for the profound impact he had on so many lives.

He touched many hearts, and his legacy of service, love, and adventure will live on in all who knew him.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Cushman and Virginia (Miller) Cushman; brother and sister, Howard Cushman and Sally Cushman; as well as his Goddaughter, Erynn Vondell.
