Barbara A. McElwain Obituary

Barbara A. McElwain, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and community staple, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on September 2, 1932, in Malone, NY, Barbara led a life marked by commitment to family, service, and her community.


A proud graduate of Fort Covington High School in 1950, Barbara pursued her passion for healthcare by graduating from Eastman Dental Dispensary School for Dental Hygienists in 1951. That same year, she embarked on a lifelong partnership with Glenn F. McElwain, marrying him on June 9, 1951, at the Fort Covington Presbyterian Church.


Barbara's career at the U.S. Postal Service spanned 28 years, where she ultimately retired as the Postmaster of Fort Covington on October 1, 1992. Her unwavering dedication to her work and her community reflected her belief in the importance of connection and service to others.


Beyond her professional life, Barbara cherished her time with family. She is survived by her son, Andrew McElwain and daughter-in-law, Teri McElwain; daughter, Laura Amiss and son-in-law, Barrett Amiss; son, Gordon McElwain and daughter-in-law, Terre (Tarbell) McElwain; her grandchildren, Clint McElwain and Kathy (Carr), Sean McElwain, Barrett Amiss II and Lauren Amiss Ferrell, Darren McElwain and Daly McElwain; and great-grandchildren, Emma Jane McElwain, Zoe Ferrell, Darby Ferrell, Charlie McElwain, and Anna McElwain. She also leaves behind nieces, Lillian Anderson Duffy and Lynne Anderson.


Barbara was preceded in death by: her parents, Franklin and Ruth (Jeffrey) Anderson; her brother, G. Bruce Anderson; and her nieces, Lorraine Anderson and Leigh Anderson.


Barbara enjoyed a variety of hobbies including quilting, knitting, reading, and crossword puzzles, which provided her with joy and fulfillment throughout her years. She was an active member of the Fort Covington Presbyterian Church and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States, where she contributed her time and talents with grace.


In honor of her life and service to the community, donations can be made to the Fort Covington Fire and Rescue or North Country Hospice.


Calling hours will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on April 10, 2026 at Cappiello-McKenzie & Cosgrove Funeral Home, 2352 State Route 37, Fort Covington. A funeral service reflecting Barbara's life will follow at 12:00 pm at the funeral home and burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Friends and family are encouraged to gather in remembrance and celebration of her remarkable legacy.


Barbara A. McElwain will always be remembered for her kindness, strength, and unwavering love for her family and community. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
