Obituary of Nancy H. Bertrand

Nancy H. Bertrand, 77, of Owls Head, NY., passed away Saturday, June 16, 2018, at the U.V.M. Medical Center, in Burlington, VT.

Born in Randolph, VT., October 4, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Alec and Marion Kerry Hammond.

On May 16, 1969, she was united in marriage to Leo Bertrand in Albany, NY. He predeceased her on December 3, 2011.

Many years ago, Nancy was a bartender at the Wagon Wheel in Malone, NY. She later owned and operated the Sister’s Corner Café and later the Friendly Café in Malone. She also owned and operated the Owls Perch Diner in Owls Head, NY. for several years. She later was employed by Johnson Newspapers as a supervisor for the insertion advertisements. For more than eight years, Nancy was an associate for Wal-Mart in Malone. She retired several years ago.

She was a member of the Owls Head United Methodist Church and a past member of the Owls Head-Mountain View Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department Auxiliary. She was an avid Bingo player and enjoyed playing cards and word search games. Her true talents were in the kitchen, where she loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. She was also a volunteer cook and server at the Malone Knight of Columbus #308 dinners. She loved her cats dearly.

Survivors include one daughter and son in law, Marcelline and John Ryan of Owls Head, NY., a girl that she loved like a daughter, Kelly Conto and her husband, Bruce of Owls Head, NY., two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Richard and Edith Hammond of Constable, NY., William and Rebecca Hammond of Malone, NY., and Yvonne Hammond of Constable, NY., one sister, Margaret McDonald of Malone, NY., eight grandchildren, Nicolas Bertrand, Linsey King, Michael King, Jr., Timothy King, Sarah King, Emma Jacques, and Natalie and Bryleigh Conto and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Along with her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Marcel and Kenneth Bertrand, one daughter, Sylvia Everleth, two brothers, Robert and Alvin Hammond and one sister, Nina Tucker.

There are no calling hours. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2018, at 1 p.m. at the Owls Head United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lori Buno-Taylor officiating.

Donations may be made in her memory to Life Flight or to the Owls Head-Mountain View Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
