George “Fred” LaBrake, 86, of Moira, NY., passed away unexpectedly early Tuesday morning, July 3, 2018, at his home.

Born in Bombay, NY., he was the son of Florence Rushlow. He was adopted and raised by Theodore and Georgianna LaBrake.

Fred served in the United States Air Force from April 15, 1951 until his Honorable Discharge on April 22, 1955.

Many years ago Fred was employed by Bombay Slipper Factory in Bombay, NY. He later was employed by ALCOA in Massena from 1956 until he retired in1994.

On December 19, 1959, he was united in marriage to the former Agnes E. Shartrond in Malone, NY. She predeceased him on August 11, 1971. On September 1, 1973, he was united in marriage to the former Elizabeth Gardner LaPage. She predeceased him on November 17, 2004.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, in Fort Covington. Fred served as Senior First Vice Commander, Dept. of New York Amvets from 1999-2000, Franklin County American Legion Commander from 1980-81, Past Commander Post 4 Amvets in Massena, Past Commander Post 1418 American Legion in Fort Covington, Rifle Squad Commander and Chaplin for Post 4 Amvets in Massena for several years, and a Past Chaplin for the N.Y.S. Amvets. He was a Boy Scout Master in Fort Covington and Brushton-Moira for ten years.

On June 24, 2005, he received his High School Diploma at the Salmon River Central High School Commencement Ceremonies in Fort Covington, as part of Operation Recognition to honor veterans who quit high school to serve their country at war time.

Survivors include his companion, Pearl Arsenault of Moira, one daughter Velvet LaBrake and her companion, Jeffrey Love of Massena, a son in law, Gary Bennett of Fort Covington, one brother and sister, five grandchildren, Tapeni and Hope LaBrake, Tracy Oakes and Heather and Justin Bennett, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Along with his mother, parents and his two wives, he was predeceased by one son, Vincent LaBrake on November 11, 1982, one daughter, Tamara Bennett on January 6, 1989 and several brothers and sisters.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 9 until 10:30 a.m. at the Cappiello-McKenzie and Cosgrove Funeral Home, in Fort Covington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m., at St. Mary’s Church, in Fort Covington, with the Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will be in the old St. Mary’s Cemetery, in Fort Covington.

Donations may be made in his memory to either the Fort Covington American Legion or to the Amvets Post 4, in Massena, NY.
