Charlotte G. Smith, 82, of Fort Covington, NY, passed away Wednesday night, August11, 2021, at the Alice Center, in Malone, NY. She had been a resident there since January 12, 2007. Born in Brasher Falls, NY, February 13, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Vernon and Josephine Gaffney Gray. She graduated from Salmon River High School, in 1956. On November 3, 1956, she was united in marriage to Lawrence J. Smith, at St. Patrick’s Church, in Hogansburg, NY. He predeceased her on June 2, 2008. For many years along with her husband, they owned and operated a dairy farm in Fort Covington. Charlotte was employed at Tru-Stitch Footwear and later Shield’s Slipper Factory. She later was a clerk in the business office of Salmon River Central School. She retired in 2005. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, in Fort Covington, and a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading. She was a wonderful cook. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Lawrence Jr. and Anne Smith and Donald Smith all of Fort Covington, NY; two grandchildren that she adored, Whitney Brockway and her husband, Jason of Fort Covington, NY, and Lance Smith and his wife, Denice of Norfolk, NY; five great grandchildren, Audrey and Thomas Brockway, and Olin, Shea and Remi Smith; one sister Elizabeth Greathouse of Vancouver, WA; three sisters-in-law, Donna Washburn and her husband, Wayne, Norma Lauzon and her husband, George all of Fort Covington, NY, and Anita Leroux and her husband Harold of Evans Mills, NY; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Along with her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters-in-law, John and Madeline Gray, Donald Gray, Archie and Anna Mae Gray, and Robert and Kay Gray; two sisters and three brothers-in-law, Eileen and Bertram VanDerbilt, Shirley and Giles Montpetit and Kenneth Greathouse; a brother-in-law and his wife, Charles and June Smith and a nephew, Andrew Greathouse. Calling hours will be Tuesday, August 17, 2021, from 10 until 11:30 am., at the Cappiello-McKenzie and Cosgrove Funeral Home, in Fort Covington, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Noon in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will be in the old St. Mary's Cemetery, in Fort Covington, NY. Donations may be made in her memory to St. Mary's Church or to the Fort Covington Volunteer Fire Department or EMS. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.brusofuneralservice.com.
