Obituary of Robert A. Hammond, Sr.
~Robert A. Hammond, Sr., 85, of Constable, NY., passed away early Tuesday morning, June 6, 2017, at his home, while under the loving care of his family and Hospice of the North Country, Inc.
Born in Braintree, VT., July 5, 1931, he was the son of the late Alec and Marion Kerry Hammond.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 until his Honorable Discharge in 1954.
On October 22, 1955, he was united in marriage to the former Yvonne M. Gardner, at St. George’s Church, in Burke, NY. She survives.
From 1954 until 1962, he owned and operated a tractor trailer truck, hauled milk and worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway Project. From 1962 until 1970, he was employed by Local 545 Operating Engineers, in Bath, NY. From 1970 until 1975, he operated a logging business, in Malone, NY. From 1975 until 1978, he was employed by G.W. Plastics, in Bethel, VT., and from 1980 until he retired in 2001, he owned and operated a dairy farm, operated his tractor trailer truck, did over the road trucking for various companies and operated his logging business.
He was a member of the North American Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and maple syrup production.
Along with his wife, Yvonne, he is survived by three sons and a daughter in law, Robert Hammond, Jr., and his companion, Robin Dillingham of Malone, NY., Alvin Hammond of Randolph, VT., and Edward and Robin Hammond of Constable, NY., four daughters and two sons in law, Jean Alexander of Randolph, VT., Bonnie and Patrick Young of Constable, NY., Lisa Huffman of Randolph, VT., and Lynn and Roger Fournier of Norwood, NY., two brothers and sisters in law, Richard and Edith Hammond of Constable, NY., and William and Rebecca Hammond of Malone, NY, two sisters, Margaret McDonald of Malone, NY., and Nancy Bertrand of Owls Head, NY., nineteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one son, Alan P. Hammond on August 7, 1960, one son in law, Peter Alexander, one brother, Alvin Hammond, one sister, Nina Tucker, and two brothers in law, Leo Bertrand and Cyril McDonald.
A reflection of his life will be held on a date to be announced.
Burial with full Military Services will be held in the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph Center, VT., on a date to be announced.
