I always knew this day would come. Although I thought I was prepared, it leaped out at me with unexpectedness. Even though my father lived a full life of 94 years, it’s hard to summarize this man in just a few lines on a page.
Born Harmon L. McFaul in 1928, to Canadian James J.McFaul and American Pearl G. Trimm in Duane N.Y. He was better know as “Tim”. So named by his father because he reminded him of the toy ” Timmy the Turtle “.
He had a most colorful life. He was an excellent baseball player and I remember watching him and his brothers play many games on the old Spaulding fields where Norte Dame School is now. He went on to have a wonderful career on local softball teams around Malone in the 1960’s. Although he could hit, he was jokingly called a “junk ball “ pitcher.
My Dad was an accomplished boxer with over 40 wins and 1 defeat while boxing for the Malone Armory. His fund raising bouts from various matches went into building the Malone Rec Park on Duane Street.
He was an avid hunter, a sure shooter and a marksman with the bow and arrow. He had eagle eyes and could spot a deer hiding just by seeing a nose or ear through a spruce tree!
Dad loved to fish and many a days I spent with him on Lake Meacham. Growing up with my family , we spent most summers tent camping at Lake Meacham. The most wonderful life for kids to experience, the best memories.
He was a gifted carpenter and our family ate sawdust most of the year as Dad renovated room after room in our Teboville home. Later in life he would take up whittling fishing lures, birds and animals. I possess one of those creations which will always be treasured.
In the early days , Dad worked at the Tru-Stitch with his brothers making moccasins and foot ware for all to enjoy. He went on to work in the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. From there he was one of the first group of people hired by a new industry in Massena called, Reynolds Aluminum Company. He worked his way up to supervisor and retired in 1983 after a long career there.
Dad enjoyed life after retirement, hunting , fishing , camping , skiing Lake Titus Mt. and spending time with his family. In September 2022, my parents celebrated 73 years of marriage!! Another wonderful milestone in my Dad’s lifetime.
I had the most wonderful gift of living with my Dad in his “ prime” and seeing him as a young man and watching him grow into a 94 year old. It’s been a fantastic journey.
Dad, you will be missed by me and all who have loved you. Long live your memory. Until we meet again.
Love you
Timmy
