Obituary of Margaret Mayer

Margaret “Peggy” Mayer, 76, a longtime resident of Brushton, NY, peacefully passed away at the Alice Center in Malone, NY on August 9th, 2023.
Peggy was born to the late Raymond and Mabel “Margaret” Naughton Van Slyke on July 26, 1947 at the Bethany Deaconess Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.
She attended and graduated from Hicksville High School, Hicksville, NY, and later received her bachelor’s degree from SUNY Potsdam.
On June 28, 1969, she married John P. Mayer Jr. at St. Ignatius Church in Hicksville, NY.
Prior to moving to Northern NY from Long Island with her husband John, she held Bookkeeping positions at King Kullen, a grocery chain and Siemen and Eiseman Insurance Company. She enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom until her children entered high school. She then became a long-term substitute teacher at Salmon River Central until her retirement. She also taught religious education at St. Mary’s Church.
Peggy is survived by her husband John, her beloved children Patrick and Becky, her precious grandchildren Jacob, Alex and Jesse, and her loveable dog Sophie.
She was predeceased by her parents and her Daughter-in-Law Elizabeth “Liz” Mayer.
Peggy was a loving mother and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed her plants and garden. She had several orchids and Christmas cacti. She had a green thumb for plants. She enjoyed traveling and camping at High Falls Park in Chateaugay.
She was a member of the Brushton Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s Church in Brushton and she was a trustee for the Village of Brushton.
Friends may call on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at Cappiello-McKenzie & Cosgrove Funeral Home, Fort Covington, NY from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm.
Her funeral mass will be held on Friday August 18, 2023 at St. Mary’s Church in Brushton, NY. At 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bombay, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Brushton Volunteer Fire Department.
